Day 112: The Settlers of Catan Card Game

There was a time, not so long ago, when I was painfully shy. I rarely spent time with anyone other than my old boyfriend and his friends, whom I found intimidating. One day when I was just out of college I discovered a Livejournal community called Seattle Settlers. It was a group of people (mostly associated with the UW) who gathered every Sunday to play the board game Settlers of Catan.

I had never played Settlers but I loved board games and needed to meet some new people. I gathered up my courage and showed up alone. It was intimidating being around so many people who were already friends but having the board game to focus on helped ease me in to the situation. It took me a long time to not feel like an outsider but everyone was welcoming and friendly and we already had something in common.

I didn't truly break my shell until I left my boyfriend years later but meeting the Settlers group changed my life. Sunday became the highlight of my week for the next year and I gained many new friends. I disappeared from the radar for a few years when I moved to Lake City with my boyfriend but when I finally emerged again the Settlers group was still there for me.

The Settlers of Catan card game is definitely not as good as the board game but it's still pretty fun.
